Three movie endings that always make me weepy

graphic by K.A. Lugo

If not for the emotions a good story brings out in us, books and movies wouldn’t be as popular as they are. It doesn’t matter what the genre is and what we expect from it (the HEA/Happily Ever After of romance, the spine-tingling horror, or the wonder of a good space drama), it’s the powerful feelings they awaken in us that keep us going back for more.

The combination of seeing the story unfolding before us, hearing the verbal engagement between characters and surrounding sounds and dramatic music that make up the scene, and feeling the pull of our own internal responses all works to engage us with the characters and can have the ability to pull us in so much we feel like we’re part of the story.

As the excitement builds, we feel anxious; our hearts swell and our stomachs sink; we fall in love then out of love then back in love again; our chests squeeze with sorrow or swell with pride; we feel envy, pity, love, joy, anger, happiness, and every other emotion as stories build to the ultimate climax.

There are a number of movies, as well as books, that do all of these things for me, but for this article, I want to talk about the top three movies that touch my heart and make me weepy.
