Like most authors with a huge backlist, I tend to like their earlier stuff the best, when their passion for writing was much fresher. With that in light, try these books...

Midnight and Key to Midnight, set in the coastal town of Midnight, the setting of which which is actually based on my real home community - Monterey Bay California. These books were originally written when Koontz was writing as Leigh Nichols.

He has an unfinished trilogy called the Moonlight Bay Trilogy - Seize the Night and Fear Nothing, and the yet-to-be-written Ride the Storm (we've been waiting years for this). The protagonist is Christopher Snow who has Xeroderma pigmentosum...he's allergic to sunlight so he lives in the nighttime hours. Also a fictional community set around the real Monterey Bay, as above.

The Odd Thomas books are also fabulous. The protag is called Odd Thomas. He's a fry-cook in a small town who has a special ability. Then danger comes to town. There are 7 books in this series.

If you don't want to invest in multiple books right off, try Intensity. It's about a woman visiting friends who are murdered in the night during a break-in. While trying to escape, the protag finds herself hiding in an RV she thinks belongs to her friends, but the killer takes off in it with her hiding in the back.

Other great single titles include Watchers, The Servants of Twilight, and Lightning...the story of a man who travels by lightning.

Koontz is the author of the iconic film, The Demon Seed, (c)1973, the movie (c) 1977.

Yeah, I'm old, to recommend these older titles, but like I said, older books tend to be better by authors with a huge backlist.

New books to check out are the Jane Hawk Thrillers, The House at the End of the World, and The Good Guy.

Koontz is often called a horror writer, but his work is so much more than that. Horror, thriller, paranormal, a little romance at times, but whatever, it's very suspenseful.

Let me know what you choose to try first and what you thought of it.
