In contrast, I believe every writer should have some form of non-self-editing edits. There are ways to do this without investing a lot. How?
Beta readers - Beta readers can be writing peers, friends, or even family, all of whom must agree to be brutally honest to tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.
Writing groups and critique partners - Be involved with a single or small group of writing peers. They're not just set up as rah-rah partners, but they work to help each other to improve their work, including working as first readers with a red pen.
Independent proofreaders - Use at least two, one after the other. Even after beta readers and crit partners/group, good proofreaders can often find the last niggling things that need fixing.
Everyone of any budget can afford the above and everyone should apply these to one's work before the work is uploaded for publication. If you won't do this, ask yourself why not?
I, for one and sure I'm not the only one, will not read books by authors who don't care about the quality and overall presentation of their work.
Including the cover art. Not everyone can afford a great cover and resort to doing it themselves, but the text should always be spelling and grammar perfect. The best presentation possible tells potential readers that the author took extreme care with how the public sees their work. If a writer can't do this for their print books, prepare for poor sales and poor reviews.
