I was raised by grease monkeys. My family had a garage and dad would often trade labor charges for work done on the car of a guy who owned a popular record store. Needless to say, dad had hundreds, if not a thousand or more LPs.
Growing up, my very first album would be The Partidge Family Album, c 1970. I was a devoted Partridge Family series viewer and had David Cassidy posters all over my walls...and the ceiling over my bed! Whatever position I woke in in the morning, I wanted to see David in my sights.
Mom was great at keeping up with the music and bought all the other albums when they were released, and David's when he went solo.
I never got into the Jacksons or the Osmonds, but dad played the hell out of his records at night after work (sometimes quite late!) and on the weekends. I soon grew to love a wide range of music...the blues of Janis Joplin, the electric stylings of Jimi Hendrix, the melodic voices of the Mamas and Papas, the sexy deep voice of Elvis, the bluesy British tunes of Led Zeppelin, etc...
I grew to love most music from the 50s through the 80s. Never really got into the 90s and naughties, to be honest, and even these days I'm selective of modern music. Maybe I'm just at the age that what the kids now call Oldies is just the favorites of my era. But I can quite happily return to the Partridge Family and belt out Echo Valley 26809 and Come On, Get Happy like a pro :-)
