I love word origins! This was a cool one.

In Roman times, salt was so valuable that it was sometimes used as an alternative currency; the Bitcoin of its day, if you will. Soldiers were partly paid in salt. That part of their salary, called sal dare (which means “salt give-out” or “to give salt” in Latin), is the origin of the word soldier.
