Are Cinemas Doomed To Be Lost To Nostalgia and Forgotten Tradition?
Going to the cinema isn’t just what you get out of it, but also what you bring to it.
I recently read, and re-read, and article entitled Do Audiences Want Theaters Anymore?: Audiences are leaving the nostalgia of the theater and unknowingly erasing the third space by filmmaker Sarah Ligatich here on Medium with great interest. I urge you to read her article first before continuing here. Context is everything, and I want to touch on a few things she said.
In Sarah’s piece, she starts by saying, “The local cinema seems to be dying a slow, painful death…”
“…the goalposts for what defines cinematic success have shifted significantly. From authentic storytelling to marketing tie-ins, movies have become less about genuine substance and more about their ability…making as much money as possible.”
“Nostalgia dictates that the theater used to be a place of connection and inspiration…Theaters used to be one of the healthiest “third places” communities had…because it was inexpensive and a guarantee of safety.”
